Fettick screen size

Fettick Darper (suggested by NaNoWriMo forum user Squidshire) is… basically just awful.

There isn’t much more to say on the matter.

Kngunt screen size

Aurus Euraid Richathoir, heir to the throne of Faerie, was wilfully ignored by his father. The boy instead lost himself in an imaginary world, where his self-inserts destroyed depictions of his father regularly. When his father was assassinated and he took the throne, aged seven, Aurus’ first act was to scrap his birth name in favour of his favourite made-up character’s. He gave himself elaborate titles, changed them regularly, and, with the savage whimsy of a child, had all those who stumbled on them swiftly executed.

Fast-forward 20 or so years, and the titles still change on a monthly basis. His current name and titles are Kgnunt G’hfryu Hyiopd Ve’DetYi, Son of Jkiop Deauy Gy’Sedrit, Son of AwerbJu MityUp De’yuIas, King of Gheritua, Protector of the Seritas, Chosen One of Ter’Sadiat, the Eternal (suggested by Sophie Green).

Despite this, deprived of a loving father, Kgnunt seeks nothing more than to be loved. Distancing himself from his son, he instead seeks this from his people – the Seilies, at least. Which leads him to ignore and mistreat the Unseilies. Which leads to institutionalised racism, and Unseilie resistance, and the brink of all-out war.

Dinkle screen size

Dinkle Brock (suggested by Jonathan Rothwell) was given the son of Faerie’s king to look after, almost as a joke. Following the king’s assassination, however, Dinkle was the one laughing. Having taken care of the young prince, he was immediately elevated to the position of the new king’s right-hand dachshund, a position he was careful and clever enough to maintain.

All well and good in times of prosperity. When hardship struck, Dinkle found that having eliminated all the other competent people in the palace (in one way or another) was a distinct problem. So now he finds himself trying to balance Faerie’s books in the international fantasy markets, being the public face of the king’s sporadic cruelties against his own people, and investigating the burgeoning Unseilie liberation movement. He doesn’t have much time to see his family these days.

Salman screen size

Salman Fishdie (suggested by Frank Norman) wasn’t always called Salman Fishdie. A long time ago, that was his stage name. He played in a band called Authorisation, with water-nymph guitarists William Fair-Folkner and Ernest HemingFaie, singing anti-establishment songs at the bottom of a lake and hoping the Golden Court would turn a blind eye. They did, for a while.

Salman’s tail was removed in the incident, and he surely would have died had Rognari not come across him. Since then he’s been Rognari’s PR man in FAIE, connecting with the common folk or beastie where Rog’s supercomputer brain just can’t. He wears a broad fishy smile, but when dealing with the Golden Court, that smile is only scales-deep.

Rognari Screen Size

Rognari Sorda (suggested by Simon Ball) was born to a Seilie father and an Unseilie water-nymph mother, hence the fins and the blowhole on the back of the neck. As Seilie mistreatment of Unseilies increased, the family emigrated to America. Rognari grew up studying engineering and loving that great American symbol: the gun.

Upon finishing his education, he returned to Faerie, intent on setting things right the only way he knew how. He set up the Folk and Animals In Equality movement, wielding his own home-made equipment to repair injustices in Faerie. Unfortunately his planet-sized intellect doesn’t quite stretch to understanding his fellow folk, leading to frequent frustration and people calling him names behind his back.

Cinnamon Screen Size 2

Is Cinnamon (suggested by Abi Rose) her real name? Probably not. She showed up in a bar called Cinnabar when the crew of Radio Hard Place were having a drink there and tried to steal Darren’s bag. History doesn’t tell us whether she would havce succeeded, because shortly afterwards Fettick Darper arrived and excrement collided with the cooling device.

If the big insectoid wings didn’t tip you off, Cinnamon’s a fairy. Strictly speaky, a resistance fighter for the Unseilies, or “Platinals” as they call themselves. Being able to shrink down to moth-like size and her natural ability to pilfer stuff has come in useful in FAIE’s intelligence operations. Being hypnotically attracted to shiny things and fire, less so.

Darren “Dazzhands” Saltmarsh by Emily Stewart

Darren Screen Size 2

Darren Saltmarsh (suggested by Alana Clark) is the university firebrand-turned-gobby radio DJ (is there any other type of radio DJ?) at the heart of this piece. Likes 80s rock, coffee, and e-cigarettes. Dislikes tea, Fettick Darper, and, of late, the DJ business. At least the latter won’t be a problem for long.

It’s receiving a fairy-origin McGuffin from an old friend that sends “Dazzhands” spiralling down an extra-dimensional rabbit hole into the eponymous Faerie: a world where there’s no coffee or nicotine, and far too much Fettick Darper. Fairies don’t swear either, so Dazz will just have to swear enough for all of them.
